Good Samaritan Road Trippers Save Abandoned Dogs
When dogs are the victims of inhumane cruelty and injustices, it is good to know that there are people who care. Two such people are brothers Briggs LocHaven and Chris Vanness, who saved two abandoned puppies while driving down an Arizona highway.
According to a story in The Dodo, the brothers were making their way to Colorado when they saw the pups on the side of the road.
“We stopped and got out of the car to check on them,” said Vanness. “They were friendly and severely dehydrated and starving and our hearts just sank. We didn’t have to capture them — they literally jumped in our car. We were speechless and our only thought was we need to get these guys some food and water and a bath.”
After giving the stranded canines some food and water, the group continued on to Colorado where they managed to find a home for the two dogs in the form of a friend who adopts rescues.
It’s good to know even in the face of cruelty, that there are always Good Samaritans.

Monastery Rescues Dog, Makes Him a Monk
After a stray pup wandered its way into a Franciscan monastery in Bolivia, the monks living there decided to rescue the homeless dog and make him an honorary monk, according to a story by The Dodo.
The dog, who now goes by “Friar Mustache” is the newest member of the monastery in Cochabamba, Bolivia, which is part of a Catholic order established by the patron saint of animals.
Friar Mustache has taken the blogosphere by storm, posing with his fellow monks in his very own, dog-sized habit.
According to the monks, the pup has thrived in his new home.
“His life is all about playing and running,” said monk Jorge Fernandez. “The brothers love him very much. He is a creature of god.”
A local animal rescue in Bolivia known as the “Cold Nose Project” praised the monks for taking in the dog, writing, “If only all the churches of our country would adopt a dog and care for him like Friar [Mustache], we are sure the parishioners would follow their example.

New San Francisco Law Helps Rescue Dogs Find Homes
Image via The Independent, Getty
As part of an effort to curb inhumane breeding practices throughout the city, legislators in San Francisco passed a law that will force pet shops to sell only rescue animals.
While licensed breeders won’t be affected by the law, those who run puppy-mills will. In addition to taking on these inhumane forms of breeding, the law will perhaps most importantly encourage the purchase of shelter dogs who need homes.
In an interview with the U.K. newspaper The Independent, PETA director Mimi Bekhechi described the law as progressive, noting that it would set a good example for other cities to follow.
The same article notes that a number of other cities such as Boston, Austin, Chicago, and Los Angeles already have similar laws that encourage the purchase of rescue animals over puppy-mill dogs.
In the interview, Bekhechi notes that “Pet shops’ greed fuels the cruel commercial breeding industry that keeps female dogs and cats prisoner inside filthy wire cages. Their only purpose is to churn out litters of inbred puppies and kittens who are then taken away from them, transported hundreds of miles, and sold.”
While San Francisco currently doesn’t have any licensed stores that sell dogs bred in puppy-mills, the law would prevent any from opening in the future leaving San Francisco dog lovers to rest easy.

Dog Saves Helpless Puppy From Pile of Trash
Recently, a police officer in Novo Horizonte, Brazil, spotted a neighbor’s dog rummaging through some trash, not a particularly unusual scene. However the afternoon took a turn when the officer returned home, finding the dog with something in her mouth.
Initially the officer thought the dog had found a dead kitten, but the truth was so much sweeter. This incredible dog had actually rescued a puppy who miraculously had survived her brief stint in the trash.
The canine savior started whining when the puppy was taken, so she was allowed to watch over him as the officer contacted a local animal rescuer, Marco Antonio Rodrigues, for help. Even though this dog saved the puppy’s life, another dog would be needed to help the tiny thing grow up strong.
Since the dog who had found the puppy wasn’t producing milk, an appeal was made on facebook to find a nursing dog to take the puppy in.
That’s when the little thing found her foster mom
Unfortunately the person who did this will probably never see justice, but for now we can rest easy, knowing this puppy is on her way to living her best life.

Mom and Daughter Dogs Reunited After 7 Years
In 2008, a sweet 10 month old dog named Nora was rescued from deplorable conditions in a backyard breeding operation in Canada. Not only was she severely emaciated, she was also pregnant.
But with the help of her rescuers, Funds For Furry Friends, she was able to give birth to her puppies in a safe and caring environment, only two days after her escape.
Once her and her four puppies were strong enough, they were all put up for adoption and found loving forever homes. Nora especially found her people, fitting in perfectly to a family of five, bonding especially with the three children of her
Looking for a dog, ELizabeth Spence and her husband arranged to meet with Nora at her foster home, and immediately fell in love. Though she still showed signs of the trauma she endured, she bonded with the family quickly, especially the couple’s three young children.
Spence had no reason to believe Nora would ever see one of her puppies again, but received a call last year that changed the game. A family who had adopted one of Nora’s daughter’s could not longer keep her, and wanted to know if the Spence’s could take her in. Nora’s daughter, Remi, lived on a farm six hours aways, but her owners drove all the way to meet Nora and her owners in Winnipeg. And if there was any doubt that the Spences would take her in, Remi and Nora made it clear pretty almost immediately.
The two started playing as if they hadn’t spent a minute away from each other. And now they’ll never have to.

Thoughtful Husband Surprises Wife With Flowers- For Their Dog
Surprising loved ones with a beautiful bouquet of flowers has been a long standing tradition amongst the more romantic types in our world. Naturally when a woman named Debbie Cardone had flowers delivered to her home, she assumed they were from her husband for her. It appears however, that she was mistaken.
“I thought they were for me at first, and then I read the card,” Cardone told website The Dodo. Her name wasn’t who the flowers were addressed to.
As it turns out they were for the couple’s beloved bulldog Sebastian.
This lucky pup seemed to appreciate the gesture, as he was still in recovery from having both of his knees operated on recently. Debbie’s husband works overseas, so he decided to send flowers along with words of encouragement.
While she probably would have preferred the flowers to be for her, she had to admit. It was pretty cute.
