If you haven’t seen by now, a man was arrested for taping the muzzle of a Staffordshire Terrier shut.

Let me say that the images below may be considered graphic for some.  Proceed with your own caution.

The Police of North Charleston have made an arrest for this horrific act.

Caitlyn is 15 months old and is slowly recovering.  She lost blood flow to her tongue because her muzzle was taped so tight.

Here is her progress:

As you can see, Caitlyn has been slowly improving thanks to the awesome work of the people over at Charleston Animal Society.

Unfortunately for her, experts state that she will be permanently disfigured and disabled, even though she is getting better.

Here is the man arrested:

Let’s hope for an even speedier recovery for Caitlyn.

We’ve all seen the cliché posts regarding why you shouldn’t parent a Pit Bull…

And we’ve all seen posts about why you SHOULD parent a Pit Bull…

And although we definitely prefer the latter – the fact is that it’s always humans thinking the dog deserves them.

While we are lifting these pups up onto a pedestal – let’s spin this in a different direction.

How To Know If YOU Deserve a Pit Bull:

If you want to invest in another family member, you deserve a pit bull.

If you want to take the time to show a cute face around town and socialize the pup, you deserve a pit bull.

If you can appreciate how smart pit bulls are, you deserve a pit bull.

If you can play their games, you deserve a pit bull.

If you aren’t scared of a blanket judgment and are willing to educate yourself, you deserve a Pit Bull.

If you have other pets, or children who are looking for a friend…they deserve a Pit Bull.

Here’s the scoop: You deserve a pit bull if you’re willing to put the time, energy & love into it.

They will give you exactly what you give them.

We are excited to announce that during May and June, Bullymake and Handsome Dan’s Rescue are teaming up!

Handsome Dan is one of 22 dogs who was rescued from the estate of NFL quarterback, Michael Vick.

Handsome Dan’s opportunity at a second life is amazing, and it’s incredible organizations like these that provide so much for animals in need.

Here is his story (via the Handsome Dan site):

“Handsome Dan is one of the 22 dogs who came to Best Friends Animal Society from the estate of NFL quarterback, Michael Vick after he was arrested and charged with, “conspiracy to engage in dog fighting in violation of the animal welfare act.”

For the first time in history, these dogs were allowed to be evaluated as individuals! They were the victims of cruelty, and deserved to be treated as such! While Dan was extremely fearful of people, he was great with other dogs and not dangerous at all. He would be given a second chance at life.

Handsome Dan was among the bottom third of the group when evaluated by Tim Racer, Founder of Bad Rap and Rebecca Huss, court appointed guardian to the dogs. During the initial evaluations Tim granted him his name, thinking Dan needed a confidence-boost, so Handsome Dan it was.

After some long months in quarantine in Virginia, Nicole Rattay, Founder of Just A Dog rescue, was able to get Dan comfortably outside into the shelter’s exercise area to loosen up. He was still not running and playing as some of the others in the group were, but he would do his famous “fly-bys”, where he would trot just close enough for her to pet his side.

After a year and a half of love and care at Best Friends, Dan was the second dog to be adopted, making his way home to Rhode Island. His learning curve was going to be steep, but both him and his family were up for the challenge.

Dan settled into his new home and instantly became friends with his 14 year old human brother, and two dog siblings, Story, an older Golden Retriever and Ocean, a Cattle dog. He seemed to be experiencing his lost puppyhood and loving every minute. January 1, 2010, Handsome was officially adopted into his family.

In April 2010, Dan helped his family welcome their new daughter to the family. Handsome became fast friends with her and was never far from her side. He even slept next to her crib while she napped. No wonder pitties are known as Nanny Dogs in the UK.

Handsome Dan will likely always be a fearful dog, but has come so far since he was rescued from the Vick compound. The amazing people he has met along the way have shown him that humankind can offer love and care.

While Handsome Dan’s confidence continues to grow, he will likely never be as outgoing at public appearances like other Vicktory Dogs. He generally greets the outside world with extreme caution. Dan is happiest being with his group of friends, family, and familiar settings. Be sure to follow Handsome Dan and his daily adventures on his Facebook page!

And here’s a pic of Handsome Dan enjoying his Bullymake Box!

Like humans, dogs can get bored with their everyday activities.  So mix it up a bit – we’ll help you with that.

So without further ado, let’s take a look at these 5 great activities:

      1. Hide and Seek: Believe it or not, hide and seek is a great way to exercise your dog physically and mentally.  You can hide around trees or in your backyard, or anywhere you see fit.  Naturally, most pups like to follow and seek their humans.  This can get your pooch running around in the backyard and help challenge their mind while they try and find you.
      2. Fetch: A classic, playing fetch with your dog is a great physical activity. Dogs have a natural instinct to hunt or herd. Fetch can get them up and moving and give them an instinctual task.
      3. New Toys: Dogs get bored of toys easily.  They may “figure it out” or chew a toy to death, and after that they simply get bored.  Incorporating fresh new toys is a great way to stimulate your pup mentally.  Using a food puzzle toy is also a great way to keep your dog busy.  These kind of toys trap treats in them, and your dog must figure out how to get them out.
      4. Tug-Of-War: A doggy favorite, playing tug of war is an excellent way to get some physical activity in for your pup.  If your pet is anything like mine, he/she could play tug-of-war for days.  Just try to keep it indoors on hot days to avoid any kind of overheating issues.
      5. Walk to New Places: Discovering new places is a great experience for your dog and will keep them happy.  Dogs are eager to learn, and one way you can help them learn is by allowing them to visit new places!  It helps them mature and understand their surroundings.  Take your dog out for a walk and let him explore a little bit!

I’m absolutely in love with all power chewing dogs – and really all dogs!

But there are a few habits that are unique to power chewers that drive us crazy sometimes.

I have a closet monster of my own.  And he likes to chew my most important stuff (usually my high heels, that little turd).

Closet Monster!

In the beginning, we thought that he was just exploring things because he would put everything in his mouth, but now we know that this is his thing. He is 15 months old and he still chews on just about everything…

After nearly 10 pairs of shoes destroyed, including our guests’ shoes, it was getting old fast!

Dogs are so smart and they can learn anything, they just need a little teaching!

So Here’s the Tip

I put some objects on the floor to make a quick learning game for him.

I started with a toy that called ‘BUNNY.’ I also used the word ‘BONE,’ and using these words I rewarded Dex every time he picked up the right object with a nice treat. This was the starting point.

I then added other toys – and later on some shoes, but this time saying ‘No, Leave it’ whenever he went for the shoe.

I rewarded him if he responded to the command by staying away from the shoe with some treats as well.

The positive reinforcement of rewarding him when he followed my commands allowed him to quickly learn what is okay to chew and what is not okay.

Easy right? so now you go try if you have the same problem and report back.
