These look like really happy and excited dogs! I love how energetic these pit-bulls look like in the pictures. I had a pit-bull growing up as a kid and it was the most fun thing ever. I've been trying to convince my wife to get one but she is scared of them. What is a good method of showing my wife that pit-bulls can be good dogs as well?
Spend time at a shelter and let her interact with a few
EXACTLY
I love all animals but do the research pit bulls were born to do specific jobs. Pit bulls do what What they do its in their jobs all dogs are bred for a reasons Pit bulls guard their owners and I get that. Just do the research the animal you want. I guess it's nature verces nurture. Thank everyone for helping pitbull. They need help
Find someone has a pitbull and let her get used to it then maybe she wont be to scared of them!! I have the biggest baby one ever was
Tell her not to be ignorant and not listen to lies the media tells. Or divorce her. I'd never marry someone that close minded.
Shut up douch
Why is she a douche? I don’t get the name calling?
Yeah DIVORCE her and get a pitbull! At least he’ll be loyal to you
Divorce her!!!! The pitbull will bring you happiness and loyalty!!!!
I had two of my boys , both pit bulls , at a local pet store a while back . I had a guy and his young son ask if I could wait until he went and got his wife to see what pit bulls are like . I said sure and waited . She wasn't sure about getting close for a while but gave in when their son started playing with one . They wanted to adopt one of mine , they were fosters but I failed , but I sent them to the local humane society where I donate food and treats . I take my boys , I have 9 , everywhere to prove what you read and see on TV isn't true and Pit Bulls are better than most dogs .
Take your wife to your local pound . get the dogs out and walk them around . Many dogs don't show well locked up and once out of their cage you can see what the dog is really like . If you adopt give them a few weeks to decompress . Another good place is a local rescue . You can find them with a simple search on line . Good luck
or i love my boy but when i take him for a walk he pulls me and its like he taking me for a walk thats the only problem i got with him in the hou he like a baby
Get her a puppy....
Yes!
Adopt don't shop!
Come over to my house and my Gus will lick her face until she sees the light
Have a friend who has a pit come over or take her to their place and let her spend time with the pit bull and very soon she will get the truth behind the breed
I was terrified as well but we got Lexi at 8 weeks and all her sweetness, cuddliness, and awesome kisses finally won me over. She will be 2 in December & we adopted another that just turned 3. I trust my girla with my life.
Show her a puppy!
Let her meet them. If you know people with pits, I would recommend going over and letting her play with them. There are so many videos of newborns laying with pits. Ours is a rescue and she's wonderful. They are high energy but as long as you can them out I think anyone could do it.
Have her watch pit bull paroles it took me 18 years for my hisband to let me get one she is just now 6 months old he loves her and he is actually gonna get the pick of the liter qhen we breed her. They are such loving dogs its not the breed it is the owner and the breeder.
There are already so many unwanted dogs being put to death for simply having no place to go. Please consider not breeding your dog- the world already has so many animals in need!!
Amen!!
Agree 100%!
I completely agree! We rescued ours about 2 yrs ago. He was abandoned, emaciated and wandering the streets.
Agree
Thats true! Please dont breed! So many are killed at the shelters everyday.
AGREED!!
Please don't breed her! I know we believe we are getting a mini of our fur baby. But think about how many "mini's" will end up in a shelter or heaven forbid worse. If she has three beautiful pups and one of them ends up with an "ignorant" family and ends up in a shelter or worse...that means a third of your furbaby mini will be in a horrible, probably deadly sutuation. Adoption is the ONLY humane way!!
I agree 100%, I have a pit,Mary, and when I took her in as a puppy I realized then that being one of the most abandoned breeds there was no need to create even more sad cases. Mary is right where she needs to be, all the love she can handle and my very, very best friend. There's not a mean bone in her, lol!
Please don't breed your dog. Every other dog in the shelter is a pit bull. There's enough out there already.
Why breed????? That's ignorant!!!
Why do you want to breed her ????
I got 2 and they just turned 2 it all how you raise them mine are babies so sweet and loving
This post has been written with all the love I have in my heart for all Pits...Please read this entire message...
Before you breed PLEASE walk through your local humane society. As pit lovers we know they've been given a very negative reputation that simply isn't true. Thankfully there are Pit Bull rescue shelters out there but they are limited on space. Leaving hundreds of pits in kill shelters just waiting out their final days...
Please please save a life and visit a kill shelter, take one out for a walk, fall in love with their personality and adopt. I understand
breeding animals can be a source of income. However if you love Pitbulls I'm sure you'll agree theres no amount of money worth the life of a pitbull.
I know you love your pit but you can't prevent the puppy you brought into this world from getting away from their original owner and cross the path of a pit hater or encounter through another pit lover of someone (of the many people) who believes the bad rap they've been given. All true pit lovers will agree there isn't any financial gain worth the life of another pit ending up awaiting death row like so many others. So please visit a kill shelter and see ALL of the sad faces of the pits knowing that they're in that cage or laying in the extreme elements just waiting to die. When you do will you be able to turn your head and walk away??? or will you join the small group of true pit bull lovers fighting for the life's of ALL pits???? Follow your heart and please, please adopt.
I tried for 2 years in my area to adopt a rescue dog. My 16 yr old mutt was put down after she was no longer comfortable. I looked and applied and was refused many many times. I live in a tiny town with a huge fenced yard. I work for myself, have flexible hours and can bring my dog to work if I choose. I was denied as I wanted another large breed dog and I have kids and cats. Had my friend from high school not bred his potties I'd be going on my 3rd year without a companion dog. I am very thankful and in love with my now 6 month old pit. I agree 100% with all these people for rescuing. But understand that there is a second side to every story.
Don't breed. Save rescues!
I'm sorry, but if you breed your baby you are irresponsible. Pit bulls are over bred and hundreds of them are dying daily. Why would you ever consider contributing to this problem???
Exactly
I AGREE it is not the breed u need to worry about its the owner and how they are raised!!!!
Just get one! She will learn through experience. I use to be afraid too but im now a proud pittbull mom.
have her meet some pitbull puppies .
My blue nose is hands down the BEST dog i have ever had in my life. Rook is so good with children and cats and other dogs. He is more well behaved then many of the smaller dogs we see when we take him to get his nails trimmed. He does not growl at other dogs. He is not aggressive. He doesn't even react at the ladies that trim his nails. He looks and sounds aggressive but i trust him with the lives of my children. We have known him since he was born and raised him ourselves from 8 weeks of age and he has had obedience class. He is an amazing example of how amazing pitties can be. I really could not recommend a better family dog! He even gives hugs!
Take her to an animal shelter..let her meet a few & see how absolutely sweet natured they are. I was like your wife 11 yrs ago, went to the animal shelter & fell in love with our Roxy who was only a few months old at the time but huge! Fast forward to today I have 2, Roxy is now 11 & we have a male we rescued who is now 4. You'll never find a better breed to have as part of your family.
Well said!! APBT are far the best breed ever!! I am a proud owner of three of them
Adoption events, share some time with one and she will understand
Have her watch the show pitbulls and parolees you truly see what amazing dogs they are on that show. Tia is my hero. Best of luck!
Hello i was deathly afraid of dogs since i was a kid as i hot older my roommate had a pit not a nice one i feel in love with him then i moved out and my other half and i got a puppy he is the best dog such a lover a 54 pound lap dog is more like it. Take her to see pups she'll fall in love.
Introduce her to as many friendly happy pitties as possible.especially the little puppies!!A pittie pup is the cutest pup out there! There's also an i❤pitbulls group.they tell all about their pups, pics & videos.theres alot of Pitt owners in the group that like your wife were Leary & even afraid of Pitts but are now 100% Pitt lovers.statistics also help.the pitbull bite statistics are actually lower than other breeds, just their bites are sensationalized because of their strength.show her how many are now police dogs, fire dogs & therapy dogs.the numbers are actually surprising because of how many people fear them out of ignorance of how great this breed can be!
Be sure you get your pit when it is 8wks old. Raise your pit as a part of the famiky, include it, teach it, stay on routine with it and choose short word commands that are consistent. Love, and compassion brings out their natural protective and loyal behaviours. Your wife will never regret it.
Have your wife read about them I have been a Pitt bull owner for 19 years it's all in how they are raised, I just adopted a two year old female she was used as a bait dog she is so greatful and my grandkids love her
Join a group on FaceBook, let her see pictures of them with children. Videos of them being silly.
I was terrified of dogs so my boyfriend brought her how extremely early 5 weeks ..I was so scared but now she is two and she is my heart..I never thought in a million years I would love a dog especially not a pit..but pits are so loving and smart..I hope she gets a chance to experience the love from a pit .
My husband was the same way! A friend saved 7 puppies and knew I'd be a great home for one of the pit puppies! She just brought it over and I couldn't resist! It took 2 weeks to get him to fall in love an except her! He's read everything he can find about the breed and now she's 5 months old and his bff! She's the best dog ever!
Introduce her to pitbull puppies & also a few adult pitbulls & explain to her they are just a dog, education about the real facts on pitbulls is a great idea too.. any dog can be taught to be aggressive, & the owners attitude has alot to do with how their pitbull grows up.. .Pitbulls love being cuddled & sit around but also love to have stuff to do, .. Not getting to know a well balanced & happy pitbull means u miss out on an awesome breed of dog,, she wont regret it & has nothing to lose by just giving the dog a chance.. . .
Introduce her to one allow the pitbull to gain her trust and love. Guaranteed to happen. I absolutely love my big furbaby
Just go for it! She'll fall in love ❤️
I was very afraid of pits my boy friend wanted another one so i told him we coyld get a puppy so that way it was raised with us and i would know how he was raised. I love my dog and we are looking into getting another on. They are lover dogs all yhey want is your time and love
Just get a puppy, she will fall in love, who can be scared of a puppy
I have 2 pit bulls , they are very good family dogs. I have a toddler that sits on them and plays with them they are very tolerant of her. (Expecting a son in the spring. )
As well as 10 hens, 7 ducks and a turkey , and a rabbit , they get along with all of them.
We also have almost 3 acres of land which helps because they like to run a tired dog is a good dog. Even I long walk or run will work too. I grew up with show Boxers and have I love for the bully breeds.
Try taking her to visit a few, friends, family, pound. Let her hear about all the positive things, obviously she has heard enough negative things so just allow her room to come around to it all as she is comfortable. Eventually she will come around. If not then show her puppies. Puppies aren't scary lol. Getting a puppy is what did the job for me. I was afraid of them too but after raising one from 6 weeks to almost two now it hasn't been any different then any other dog really. If a puppy is fisable anyways. You can always show her pit bull history, which does show that they were at a point in time used as nanny dogs.
I had a friend that had the same issue and you should bring her to a friends house who owns a pit. She will fall in love as soon as the pit shows her affection and the way they act around the owners and kids.
My pittbull goes to work with me at a retirement home. She climbs up on the bes and kisses the residents. If they are crying, she licks their tears away. The residents enjoy her as much as she enjoys them. She has laid on patients beds while they are passing comforting them till the end. She loves children also. Tell your wife that if raised right with love, they make the BEST FAMILY DOG EVER.

My sons have been begging me to find them a pitbull that is for sale. I really would love to give one a home. However, I am very nervous about it due to the breed's reputation. If I were to follow all of these tips and treat it right, would it be a good pet for my kids?
At one time I wouldn't have had one near my family. Until we got adopted by our baby boy. He's is the most gentle animal I've ever had. He's incredible intelligent and loving. He does require a lot of exercise. I've lost 30 pounds sense he arrived at my door. He didn't destroy things he'd refuse to listen to commands. As soon as he started getting the exercise he needed we haven't had a bit of trouble.
I wouldn't let my kids around pits until my son brought one home. He was so sweet and gentle. You couldn't help but fall in love with him. Bow I have 4 of them. They really are great dogs. You will need to start training as soon as possible and make sure they get lots of exercise.
Absolutely! I breed and sell American pitbull terriers. Just gave one to a 70 year old woman who wanted a companion & protector for her disabled grand daughter. She is absolutely in love!! If a 70 year old woman and a disabled child are happy I'm sure anyone would be.
Go to a local shelter and visit a few times. PitBulls are awesome family dogs. I have 2 rescues myself.
Go with a rescue and get an adult so you know their personality better. Puppies are puppies and will go thru the behaviors and not all love children. Mine lives children hates men- it's like wit any dog they're all different but they're all amazing!
We have a pit bull he loves my 7 yr old daughter and always loves being around her his is very sweet
They we're originally brought to America because of their amazing temperament and love for kids. The best would be to get a puppy they can grow up together.
I have a pit and he's the sweetest with all types of kids. My husband can be rough housing with him but when my 2 year old nephew picks up the toy two seconds later he's the most gental dog ever. It is all about how you raise them. If you get on from a good breeder that doesn't abuse them they will be the blest friend to your child forever. They are so loyal and protective but playful and sweet all in one:). I wouldn't trade my pit for the world.
Do not get from a breeder! Adopt from local rescue! The foster based rescues will know the dogs inside out. They can find your perfect match.
That's so cool that your pit bull can go from rough housing with an adult to gently playing with a toddler in such a short time-frame! I can definitely see how the breeder could play a big part in that, although I would imagine that how you treat the dog probably factors in as well. It sounds like you guys are good to your pit bull!
Mine are like that! Our 2yr old male was supposed to be hubbys dog and while he is extremely attached to my hubby, nobody gets near his momma and human siblings (two 5yr old, two 3 yr old and an 8 month old) and he protects without being aggressive even if he gets hurt UNTIL you hurt one of us. Then you better watch out! We just took in a female pup thats just under a year old a couple days ago and she already thinks she needs to sleep under the covers and be within 3 ft of mommy at all times. Being a puppy still shes really hyper most of the time but the second shes around any of our kids shes a whole new dog, every step is slow and calculated when normally she just bashes into everything. I refuse to own anything but a pit, and since seeing how great our boy is my hubby wouldnt even consider another breed when we were looking for a second dog.
They are fantastic with kids and are just great dogs overall. If you ever get one, you'll never get another breed.
I love mine.. she's 10 months old and I always said I would never own one because of all the stories you hear but after her I wouldn't own any other bread... they are the most loyal dog and so gental when trained right...
Our will be the best pet you have ever had. They are loving, loyal and will be best friends to your boys. My Boy Roman absolutly loves my 4 grand babies from 3 to 12. He is a littler ruffer with my 12 yr old but so gental with myv3 yr old. Even tho the 3 yr old taggles him. I Will never have another breed only a pit bull..
Raylin I have had my Phoebe since she was four weeks old and my almost four year old daughter and her are best friends. I have never had such an amazing dog. The bond those two have, plus she has helped with my daughter's anxiety. Phoebe Phone is now being trained for to be a service animal for my daughter! They are smart, loyal, caring and protective of the ones they love! Once you go Pit you'll never go back!
Absolutely! My pittbull was a rescue dog. You need to be the alpha and give them love and respect and they will be loyal pets. I have 4 kids and my fur baby is so good with them. Teach your kids to respect the animal.
Hands down best dogs I've ever owned, and when it comes to kids they are natural Mommy dogs, protectors.. If you are seriously considering it, I recommend looking into Rynoline Pit Bulls, if you hv Fb or just google it the Owner/Breeder is very educational and you can't go wrong! Ryan Beyer is his name.. I'll be a proud Mommy of My Rynoline in another week! :) .. Good luck and many blessings!
Yes
Pitbulls were originally babysitters yes it's true! Pitbulls LOVE being with kids. Trust me I adopted not one but 2 pitbulls. They I trust with MY LIFE. And my family's life. Pls let your kids have one adopt one already grown. Go to a shelter or a rescue. They would forever be grateful.
Funny article! lol.. I have a product you might enjoy adding to your boxes! I'm going to shoot over an email right now.
That last dog is mine! I'll take a years worth of bullymake boxes in exchange for listing a source for the photo.:)
#2 pic is me and my 3 "daughters" we all share the couch... I mean 1 cushion on the couch... Grew up with dogs mixed and pure, cats, birds, rodents, lizards and fish... None of them compare to a pit...
It's amazing how stupid and misinformed the general public is towards all Bull and terrier breeds! Any dog can be aggressive if it is abused and 99% are perfect family pets if raised correctly in a loving home. I would never own a non Bully breed ever.
Wonderful breed, wonderful post! I fully support the APBT!
My boy is a rescue. He's the love of my life. Got along well from the beginning with my two cats. Trouble is, I'm not sure about meeting other dogs while on the leash. Went to a park with him and let him come face to face with 2 other dogs (also on leashes). Both dogs (mine and theirs) began to snarl at each other. I want to take him to a no leash dog park and let him have fun but terrified of him feeling threatened and possibly hurting another (small) dog. Advice? Anyone?
I have a beautiful Amstaff girl I got from a shelter. She wouldn't hurt a person, but not so great with dogs she does not know. It's not uncommon for them to be dog aggressive and have a strong prey drive , Good or bad that's what they were bred for . Of course this does not mean they all are or that dog aggression is specific to only is this breed, you just have to know your dog. Would love to take my girl to a dog park but it's just not worth the risk of her hurting another dog or getting hurt.
I don't have advise because I deal with the same issue. My pity loves my elderly female beagle but seems to get annoyed with other dogs. And I say seems because I don't give him am opportunity to be bad. I feel a human of a bully breed it is my responsibility to keep him and others safe . So we go places only if I am willing to give him the lions share of my attention. He's a good boy but it is nerve racking at times. And I'm amazed at others with dogs that have no worries about letting there own animals confront my pity with little or no regard for the consequence. Even when I caution them. I had this dog trained professionally . I was told that he is not a. "Meet and greet dog". But what I have is a loyal, loving, friend forever. Good luck with your efforts.
Some dogs just don't like certain dogs in general. Introducing them to others when they're young is the best but if already adults the best way is to make sure you are the alpha not your dog. Let them know it's not ok to snap or snarl and just like children redirect their attention to something else. If that doesn't work just stay aware of your dogs behavior and again let them know YOU are the boss!!!
Bless you for adopting a pit! One of the most misunderstood creatures on the planet. So happy that you are asking this question as it tells me that you are a conscientious parent who wants to make the right choices for your furrbaby.
That being said. I would strongly urge you NOT to take your boy to the dog park for a few different, but very important reasons. 1st and foremost, if you are not sure of how he will react meeting other dogs, not only would you be putting your boy, other dogs and other people at risk, you also run the risk of perpetuating the myth that pitbulls are agressive. 2. From the way that worded your question, it seems to me that you feel anxiuos about this...if I can feel that all the eay over hear you bet that your boy is gonna read that loud and clear at the dog park! He will not understand why you are nervous/afraid/anxious but he will know that you ARE and feeling as though he has to protect you from some unknown threat he may react defensively towards other dogs and/or people. 3. Last but not least, we can never be sure about the temperamen of the other dogs at the dog park... if your boy is maybe on the fence with how he feels about other dogs and another dog approaches him aggressively you run the risk of 'confirming' for him that other dogs should be distrusted.
Instead I reccomend that you take your furrbaby to some training classes, obedience, agility, etc. You can speak with the trainer ahead of time to express your concerns, and your trainer can make sure that your furrbaby is interacting with well socialized dogs. Under the care and guidance of a professional, both you and your furrbaby will feel more at ease!
Hope this had been helpful! And thank you again for taking the time and trouble to keep your boy happy and safe!:)
I have 2 pitties and just like everyone they have VERY different personalities. Lexi loves people & most dogs. We can take her to the dog park & just let her go. Laila doesn't like any other dog rwally. She is ok With Lexi because they live together but a dog she "meets" she is NOT good with. You just have to put your dog in different controlled situations & see what he is or isn't good with.
He was trying to protect you. If you could go to a obedience class so you can learn to control him in that situation. He will be OK in a no leash park I'm sure.
"Stuff they can't destroy" HAH! good one
The best thing I ever did for my pittie was take her to daycare. She gets to play with other dogs but supervised not randomly at the dog park. It wears her out and it makes her very happy. I would recommend it for any dog that the owner knows would not have issues, they do a temperament test just in case. Even if it's only one day a week to keep her socialized my girl is happy. And that makes me happy.
My husband got me a puppy 6 years ago and I was afraid because I bought into all the horrible things being said about the breed. We now have 3 and they are all registered therapy dogs! We go to retirement centers, hospitals, colleges, etc. to visit and interact with many kids and adults. I want people to see what these animals are like, they are truely amazing! They do need alot of excercise, and they need socialization and training, as do most breeds. Be warned, they also love cuddling!!
Not sure about the bed one. Our pittie suffers from startled dog syndrome. He wakes up ready to attack anything in sight. So we no longer allow him in bed. This of course, happens to a variety of breeds.
We have two rescue pitties. Best dogs in the world!
3 pit bulls allow us to share the house with them. All rescues. Very laid back and the cats love them. I said life is good when your a 9 lb cat and your best friends are 3 sixty-five lb pit buls. We also have an American Eskimo Dog he is a tough little guy
I just got my 5 month old mastiff (presa canario) which is also part of the bull breed. About 2 months ago. My hunny was out of town visiting his family, then I snuck into town to buy this breed and brought it back home .. it was a week until he came back and he saw I just had gotten another mastiff. He wasn't to happy about that but he's coming around . I can tell he likes her . But its a female. All we have to do is make sure she doesn't get knocked up. Until she's older that is and finds a nice stud. Hehe.
Our last mastiff was real old. It was his time. He look just like my female I have now, dark brindle. Oh boy that's my favourite. I think I was heart broken , crying away getting mad because he was gone. It took me 9 months to finally get another beautiful dog! Man he was fast, tough and smart. One of the bestest gaurd dogs I have ever met. He did everything on command (off leash to)
So I'm training my girl the same stuff. She's doing very well for her age. She's so stuck to my hip. I don't care but my friends say she's scary like my last one . Is she going to bite .... I don't like when my friends say that to me . I have tried telling them to stop saying stuff like that and Never mind... shell attack when she attacks I said lol and on my command lol. So shut up i said. But I would never let my dog bite Anyone for no reason. Unless someone breaks in of course. I just had to write a comment too well me and princess are out man !!!
