After being rescued from an abandoned crack house, Ashley the Pit Bull was welcomed into her new family: the New York City Fire Department, according to a story from CBS News.

Last month, animal rescuers Erica Mahnken and Michael Favor came across Ashley after receiving a call from an anonymous tip that said the dog was alone in the unheated house without food or water.

According to CBS, upon arrival, Mahnknen and Favor found the dog starving and abused with cigarette burns.

In early January, Mahnken got in touch with a branch of the FDNY and asked if they’d be interested in giving the pooch a loving foster home for a while. In almost no time after fostering Ashley, the firefighters called Mahnken up and asked if they could adopt her for good.

“My heart wants to explode,” Mahnken told CBS News. “Everyone’s so quick to judge a dog, especially a dog you don’t know where it came from or what kind of person they are and what kind… It is very satisfying.”

Since being adopted only two months ago, Ashley has garnered a substantial Twitter following, with over 20,000 followers!
